Creating Inset Scenes

Creating Thinking of You Inset Scene

To create inset scenes you will need some sort of frame. I love using my dies to create frames, but you definitely don’t need them! To create the frame on this first project I used my ruler and craft knife. Be sure to watch the video to see exactly how I did it!

I love creating inset scenes on my handmade cards! Adding the frames and different levels of dimension help take this simple scene to a different level!

Before you put your scene together, you first have to gather all your pieces. In this case, after the frame was cut, I stamped and colored on the frame. I also stamped and colored the bike and banner images from the “Spring Stroll” stamp set from Joy Clair Stamps. The final pieces I needed were grass border die cuts.

Here, you can really see the different layers and levels in this inset scene! Adding dimension to some pieces and not to others adds natural shadows to your handmade scene.

Assembling the inset scenes can be tricky, but I would suggest laying out your scene to get an idea of what you want the end result to look like. From there you will get a better idea of what pieces you want glued directly to the card base and what pieces you wan to add dimension to. The assembly of this card is much easier to see, so be sure to watch the video above!

Creating the Wish Big Scene

Adding two frames really helps highlight this inset scene! I love really focusing in on the center image and adding a few images outside the smallest frame for more interest!

Creating this inset scene was so much fun! First and foremost, I doubled up on the frames, which adds more dimension and interest. To do this, I used a nesting oval die set. Nesting die sets are perfect for creating your frames for inset scenes!

I used all stamping on this inset scene! And better yet, all the images are from the Wish Big stamp set from Joy Clair Stamps!

There also a big difference between the two projects, in that the elements I used are so different. On the first project I used a mixture of ink blending, stamped images and die cuts. For this project, aside from the frames, I used all stamped images. All of the images came from the “Wish Big” stamp set and they are colored with colored pencils and OMS.

Adding dimension to only a few elements adds so much depth and dimension to my inset scenes!

On this project, it is so easy to see the different layers of dimension. Just by adding dimension to some of the elements and gluing others directly to the card base I can add so much depth and dimension!

Tips & Tricks for Creating Inset Scenes

  • The best advice I can give for creating ANY type of scene on your handmade greeting cards is definitely to lay it out before you glue! That helps so much in just getting a better idea of what pieces you want to use, where you want to put them, and so on!
  • Don’t be scared to play around with mixing different pieces. You don’t have to use all die cuts, all stamped images, etc. You can mix and match to create some really great scenes!
  • And finally, start simple. Don’t complicate it too much or you’ll just get frustrated!

I hope you all enjoyed a look at how to create these inset scene on your cardmaking projects and the video tutorial! If you are interested in any of the supplies I used today, you can find them all listed and linked down below. Until next time, happy crafting!!
